Yeovil History: Artefacts dating from the Bronze Age give evidence of the early settlement of Yeovil though little is known of these long past times, later Roman settlements also existed with plenty of examples found in the area including a Roman Villa site found at Lufton (there are others at West Coker and East Coker), and the remains of a settlement and farmstead on the Westland Road. Settlements continued to develop through Saxon times and there was certainly a Saxon church constructed by 950AD.
The earliest name for the town was Gifle (first recorded in 880AD), taken from the Celtic for “forked river”, and it was a version of this name that was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was recorded as a busy market township with 22 freemen called Givele. The Manor, then called Hendford, was acceded to the Count of Eu after the Norman Conquest, it received its first charter from King John in 1205.
Yeovil was badly affected by the Black Death in the mid-fourteenth century, which took around half of its inhabitants, serious fires in 1499, 1620 and 1643 destroyed many of its oldest buildings. Nearby Babylon Hill was the site of a battle during the English Civil War (1642-51), between the Roundheads under the Earl of Bedford and the Cavaliers under Sir Ralph Hopton, the Roundheads gaining the upper hand. Disease again hit the town in 1645, this time in the form of the Great Plague, once again wiping out much of the population.
Always a busy market town, Yeovil became important for the manufacture of gloves during the 17th century, other industries and products included agriculture, hemp, cheese making and linen thread.
The early 20th century saw the arrival of the aircraft industry in Yeovil and by the 1930’s military and civilian aircraft were being produced by the Westland Aircraft of Yeovil factory. The aircraft industry made Yeovil a prime target for bombing during the Second World War and many of the towns buildings were damaged or destroyed, one unfortunate casualty being the fire station.
